The Library offers a number of volunteer opportunities each year for qualified, motivated middle school and high school students who are in sixth to twelfth grade. By sharing their time and talents, teen volunteers develop new skills and learn about the Library’s mission, public services and core values. Whether working to fulfill a school commitment, to build a winning resume, or to serve the community, our volunteers have the advantage of exposure to a broad variety of activities. The following is a list of the volunteer programs offered to students within the Middle Country Central School District. All programs require an application, training or pre-registration in order to participate.

Grades 6-12

Buddy Programs: All first time volunteers must register for and attend the Buddy Training program in order to qualify. Training dates are listed in the library’s MCPL Quarterly program catalog.
- Art Buddies- Work with young children on art and craft projects.
- Book Buddies- Read stories to young children.
- Techno Buddies- Read and play computer games with young children.
- Green Teens- Discuss environmental issues, work on eco-friendly projects, and go on field trips. Sponsored by HSBC. Click HERE for application.

Sit ‘N’ Knit- Learn to knit newborn caps or caps for children with cancer. Completed projects will be donated to local hospitals. Check the library’s MCPL Quarterly for program dates.

Grades 7-12

Math Buddies- Help a younger buddy in grades K-2nd grade practice their math skills and assist them with math games and activities. Click HERE for application and training dates.

Teen Advisory Council- Help plan and implement library programs for all ages, provide input on teen services at MCPL, and volunteer at various library events. Click HERE for application.

Teen Book Reviewer Program-Read and review books from the most recent lists of award winning books for Young Adults published by the American Library Association. Reviews will be displayed in the library, posted on the Library’s Teen webpage and on our teen Facebook. Click HERE for application. Grades 9-12

Homework Pals- Work with students in grades 1-5 who need help with their homework. Click HERE to register.

Students are advised to apply for volunteer openings early in the school year as space is limited in some programs. Upon receipt of an application, teens will be contacted when there are volunteer openings.

The Library has put together a Teen Volunteer Opportunities binder available in the youth and teen services areas of the library providing information on agencies and organizations in Suffolk County that accept teen volunteers. Age eligibility varies by agency and some organizations do require parental supervision. The following is a list of agencies that welcome teen assistance, click on the agency for more information:
